Alexander (Inishowen)

At the time of Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s, the representatives of James Alexander were among the principal lessors in the parish of Donagh, barony of Inishowen East, County Donegal. Thomas Alexander was among the principal lessors in the parish of Fahan Lower at the same time. Reverend William Alexander was among the principal lessors in the parish of Kilmacrenan. The Landowners' report of the 1870s records Leslie W.Alexander, Ahilly, Buncrana as the owner of over 4700 acres and William Alexander, Roe Park, Limavady owning 504 acres. In 1883, Bateman noted Samuel Maxwell Alexander of Roe Park as the owner of the latter property. He had married Henrietta, daughter of Sir Frederick Heygate of Londonderry. Burke notes the descent of this family from Andrew Alexander who came from Scotland in the early seventeenth century. The family became associated with the Limavady area of County Derry. A descendant, Thomas Alexander and his son Lesley William, held property around Buncrana in County Donegal.
