Endowed Schools Commissioners

William Prior Moore was headmaster of the Royal School, Cavan, in the mid-19th century, when the Commissioners of Endowed Schools held 4 townlands (Billis, Curragho Drumcrauve and Stragelliff) in the parish of Annagelliff, barony of Upper Loughtee, county Cavan. This estate was located just to the north east of Cavan town and supported the Royal School in the townland of Lurganboy on the outskirts of Cavan town to the south west. The Commissioners for Endowed Schools are recorded as among the principal landowners in the parish of Donegal, Barony of Tirhugh, at the time of Griffith’s Valuation. In 1878, the Commissioners total estates amounted to 14,017 acres located in counties Armagh (1,275 acres), Cavan (943 acres), Donegal (7,837 acres), Tipperary (1 acre) and Tyrone (3,961 acres).
