Bateman (county Mayo)

In his listing of the great landowners of Great Britain and Ireland Bateman records "John Bateman" of Brightlingsea, Colchester, England, as the owner of almost 3,000 acres in county Mayo at the end of the 1870s. This refers to himself. Originally of Staffordshire origins he had purchased an estate in Essex in 1871. The estate in Mayo was a hunting property, purchased in 1875.
