Townsend (Shepperton & Dunbeacon)
John Townsend, great grandson of Colonel Richard Townsend, originator of the family in west Cork, inherited Shepperton in the mid eighteenth century. He was a barrister and an MP for various Cork constituencies up until the Act of Union. In 1788, on the death of his brother Henry, he inherited the Townsend Dunbeacon estates. For more information see Townsend Family Records at http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~townsend/tree/record.php?ref=214 In the 1870s the Shepperton estate was owned by Jane Townsend and amounted to over 1500 acres. The Dunbeacon estate, of almost 6000 acres, was in the possession of Richard Townsend.
