Shaw (Cork)
William Shaw (1823-1895), the son of a Congregational minister in Ulster, became a merchant in Cork and by 1867 was Managing Director of the Munster Bank. He was a Liberal, supported the Home Rule movement and was Member of Parliament for Bandon 1868-1874 and for Cork in 1874-1885. In 1885 the Munster Bank went into voluntary liquidation and in 1886 Shaw was declared a bankrupt. William Shaw was married to Charlotte Clear who came from a merchant and banking family in Cork. In the 1870s he owned 943 acres in county Cork. He lived at Beaumont, Ballintemple, Blackrock, Cork and had a summer villa built at Coolmain, Kilbrittain in 1873, see http://www.dia.ie/architects/view/2768#tab_works.
