George Austin Medlen of Lowlands, Roscrea, owned 1,365 acres in county Tipperary and 54 acres in King's County (Offaly) in the 1870s. ''The King's County Directory'' (1890) records George Austen Medlen of Lowlands as the second son of Derry Lewis Medlen, of Devon, by Mary daughter of George Austen. He was born in 1833, married in 1867, Anna Doolan, daughter of Captain James Sheppard, of Clifton, North Tipperary. He was a civil engineer and a magistrate of King's County (Offaly).
