LaBarte

The representatives of Richard LaBarte, of Shanakill, county Waterford, owned over 600 acres in the county in the 1870s while the representatives of Joseph Labarte owned almost 100 acres in county Tipperary at the same time. In May 1871, over 250 acres of the estate of Mrs. Anne LaBarte were offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court. Some of this land was situated in the barony of Imokilly, county Cork and the remainder in the barony of Upperthird, county Waterford. The sale notice details legal transactions between Richard C. LaBarte and Ussher Hearne in the 1830s. The Irish Times reported that the sale was adjourned on that occasion. The lots were eventually sold in June 1871, the purchases being Messers. Sullivan and Perrott in trust. Family history sources suggest that the Labarte family originated in the Bordeaux area of France and came to Waterford in the late seventeenth century, possibly through the wine trade.
