Pope (Cork & Waterford)

The Pope family are said to have settled in Waterford and made their fortune as wine merchants. Henry Pope, resident in Waterford, owned over 1900 acres in county Cork in the 1870s. Other members of the Pope family owned estates in county Kilkenny. Josiah Pope was among the principal lessors in the parish of Kilculiheen, county Waterford at the time of Griffith's Valuation while the representatives of Alexander Pope held townlands in the parish of Kilmacleague, barony of Gaultiere, at the same time. In June 1855 George Pope and other family members offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court their lands in the Barony of Gaultiere amounting to over 900 acres. The property was held under an 1837 lease from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to members of the Alston family, resident in Hertfordshire. The Freeman's Journal reported that the property was purchased in trust by Mr. Cherry.
