Carson (Shanroe)
In 1667, the Carson estate at Shanroe, county Monaghan, was purchased by John Carson from Thomas Coote of Cootehill, county Cavan. Further lands at Silloo were purchased in 1706 by his son Thomas Carson from Richard Robinson of Tullegoney. Many members of this family were clergymen, including Thomas Carson, Bishop of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh (died 1874), who in the mid-19th century held townlands in the parishes of Clones, Muckno and Clontibret. In 1876, the Bishop’s son the Reverend Thomas William Carson of Armagh owned 822 acres in county Monaghan while other Carson family members owned smaller acreages. The bishop's father was the Reverend Thomas Carson, rector of Kilmahon, Diocese of Cloyne, county Cork. He was also Domestic Chaplain to Murrough 5th Earl of Inchiquin. In 1802, he married Elizabeth Waggett of Kitsborough, county Cork, co-heir to her brother William Waggett. Two of their sons were clergymen, Bishop Thomas and Joseph was Vice Provost of Trinity College, Dublin. At the time of Griffith's Valuation the Reverend Thomas Carson (later Bishop) held land in the parishes of Agahada and Titeskin, barony of Imokilly, county Cork.
