Cliffe (Bellevue)

At the time of Griffith's Valuation Anthony Cliffe held land in the barony of Fermoy, county Cork. In the 1870s his county Cork estate amounted to 953 acres but his main estates were in county Wexford (4,459 acres) and county Kilkenny (2,236 acres) and he also owned 276 acres in county Meath. This family were descended from a Cromwellian settler who received grants of land in counties Meath and Wexford. Possibly acquired their county Cork lands throught the marriage (1694) of John Cliffe and Barbara Carr, eventual heir to William Carr of the city of Cork. The seat of this family was Bellevue, county Wexford. Portions of the Tipperary estate of Nelson T. Foley, executor of R. Cliffe, deceased, were sold in the Landed Estates Court in June 1877.
