Lewis (Youghal)
In 1860 the Duke of Devonshire sold his estate in and adjacent to the town of Youghal to David Leopold Lewis of London for £60,000. Lewis appears to have been unable to pay for the estate until two years later. Portions were sold in the Landed Estates Court in May 1868 and others advertised for sale again in the Landed Estates' Court in September of that year. The Irish Times contains a detailed account of purchasers in the May sale. The Duke's transactions with D.L. Lewis are well documented in the Lismore Papers.
