In the 1870s James Duncan, a medical doctor of 8 Upper Merrion Street, Dublin, owned 2,149 acres in county Limerick and 199 acres in county Dublin. Bateman, writing in the early 1880s mentions his as the proprietor of land and property in counties Dublin, Limerick and Sligo, amounting to over 2,300 acres.
