Hickey (Co Clare)

The Hickeys or O'Hickeys were an old Gaelic family, hereditary physicians to the O'Briens, Kings of Thomond. They held lands in the Quin locality of county Clare mainly at Ballyhickey, parish of Clooney and Drim, parish of Doora, barony of Bunratty Upper. The O'Hickeys lost their lands under the Cromwellian confiscation but in 1702 Drim was restored to them and they remained resident there throughout the 18th century. The house is now demolished and a late 19th century house stands in its place. The Hickeys of Kilkee and Ennis were both branches of the Hickeys of Drim.
