Lee (Barna & Bettyville)

Burke's 'Landed Gentry of Ireland'' (1958 edition) states that the Lee family purchased the lands of Barna, barony of Owny and Arra, county Tipperary, in 1668. In 1778 George Lee of Barna married Alice, daughter and heiress of John Norris of Limerick. Their second son, John, married Emma Bevan of Camas, county Limerick and John and Emma Lee had an only son, William Norris Lee of Bettyville, county Limerick, who held land in the parishes of Killeenoghty and Killanahan, barony of Pubblebrien. At the time of Griffith's Valuation Henry A. Lee held land in the parishes of Kilnarath and Kilvellane, barony of Owney and Arra, county Tipperay. In the 1870s he owned 526 acres and was residing in England. In 1852 Henry Albert Lee of Barna, county Tipperary, married Susan Kate Benn of Dromore House, county Tipperary, and died nine years later. He was succeeded by his son Albert Henry Lee.
