Bentinck/Bentick
In the 1870s A.H.F.C. Bentick of the Carlton Club, London, is recorded as owning 1,509 acres in county Clare. He was most probably a member of the Cavendish Bentinck family, Dukes of Portland. Henry Bentinck, 1st Viscount Woodstock held lands in Ireland as the Nottingham University Library holds a rental of his Irish estates dated 1699. The Bentincks were of Dutch origin and came to England with William Prince of Orange. The 3rd Duke of Portland was Viceroy of Ireland in 1783 and married a daughter of the 4th Duke Devonshire.
