O'Donnell (Trough)

This family were established in the Limerick area by the beginning of the 17th century. They supported the Jacobite cause and by the early 18th century had acquired some land in county Clare. Trough was one of their residences from at least the mid 18th century. Henry Anderson O'Donnell inherited the Limerick and Clare estates from his brother John who settled in America. Sir Charles Routledge O'Donnell who had a distinguished military career, was H.A. O'Donnell's son. Dr Elliott O'Donnell returned from America to Ireland in the early 19th century. His son Colonel John Vise O'Donnell of Trough Castle owned 878 acres in county Clare in the 1870s.
