Most Reverend John McHale, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Tuam, bought the townland of Bunnacurry [1,226 acres] in the parish of Achill, barony of Burrishoole, county Mayo, from the sale of the estate of the O'Donels of Newport in the Encumbered Estates' Court in 1854. Besides his estate in county Mayo the Archbishop held 2,048 acres in county Galway at the time of the Landowners' Survey of 1876. Bunnacurry was sold to the Congested Districts' Board on 12 Sept 1908.
